Rain or Shine: Dhaka University Students Protest Quota Restoration at Shahbagh

Demonstration rally of students of Dhaka University and other educational institutions is going on on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Shahbagh of the capital, protesting the restoration of quota in government jobs and demanding reform of quota.

The movement of students and job aspirants is going on by blocking the Shahbag intersection demanding the reinstatement of the circular issued by the government in 2018 to cancel the quota system in government jobs. Despite the rain, the agitators did not leave the road, some were wet with rain, some were standing at Shahbag intersection with umbrellas on their heads. They have announced that they will continue the movement until their demands are met.


Due to the blockade, all traffic through Shahbagh intersection has stopped. Heavy traffic has been created. Today Thursday around 11 o'clock the agitators took out a protest procession in front of the Dhaka University library.

Under the banner of 'Anti-Discrimination Student Movement', the procession went around the various roads of the Dhaka University campus and passed in front of the Raju Sculpture in the TSC area towards Shahbagh intersection. In the procession, 'quota or medha, medha medha', 'Equality of opportunity is the principle of the liberation war', 'There is no place for discrimination in Bangabandhu's Bengal', 'There is no place for discrimination in the Bengal of the liberation war', 'There is no place for discrimination in the Bengal of the 71st', 'Give news to the whole of Bengal, bury the quota system. ', 'Ek Dapa Ek Dawai Ek, Kota Not Come Back' etc. slogans were raised.

Earlier, students and job aspirants under the banner of 'anti-discrimination student movement' held a protest march and blocked Shahbagh intersection for about one and a half hours on Wednesday to demand their demands. The agitators have been holding a continuous program since July 1.

To prevent students from joining the anti-quota movement, the BCL locked the gate of Masterda Surya Sen Hall of Dhaka University this morning. As a result, many students were trapped even if they wanted to come to the procession. The gate was later opened in the face of criticism. However, a section of students were not allowed to leave the hall.
