Uruguay defeated Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a goalless draw during regular time in the Copa America 2024 quarterfinals in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, to advance to the tournament's semifinals.
Uruguay's tough, physical defense kept Brazil from posing a serious offensive threat during the 90 minutes of regular time, though it came at the cost of a red card shown to Nahitan Nandez in the 73rd minute. Despite being down to 10 men, Uruguay managed to safeguard their goal until the shootout.
Fede Valverde of Uruguay was the first to take a penalty shot, successfully sending the ball into the bottom-left corner despite goalkeeper Alisson moving in the right direction.
Eder Militao was first up for Brazil, but his powerful shot lacked height and was blocked by Sergio Rochet, giving Uruguay a 1-0 lead.
Rodrigo Bentancur took Uruguay's second attempt, and although Alisson guessed the direction correctly, he couldn't stop Uruguay from extending their lead to two.
Andreas Pereira and Giorgian de Arrascaeta then scored their shots for Brazil and Uruguay, respectively, bringing the score to 3-1 in favor of Uruguay. Brazil's Douglas Luiz, however, hit the post with his shot, leaving Uruguay just one kick away from the semifinals.
Alisson saved the shot by Jose Maria Gimenez, and Gabriel Martinelli made his kick for Brazil, keeping the nine-time Copa America champions' hopes alive for one more round. However, Manuel Ugarte tricked the goalkeeper into moving in the wrong direction before drilling his kick to seal the victory for Uruguay.
