"I came to the Upazila Parishad by buying the national newspapers and TV journalists of Dhaka and Narsingdi. They can't do anything else. Everything will stop." This is the story of Kaniz Lucky, wife of Matiur Rahman that how she went from being a school teacher to a tycoon.
Recently, Laila Kaniz Lucky, the first wife of National Board of Revenue (NBR) member Matiur Rahman, came before the public in Narsingdi on Thursday 14 days after the goat incident. Attending two events of the Upazila Parishad, Lucky boasted the comment on the journalist.
Lucky has amassed considerable wealth, raising questions about how a retired government college teacher could become so affluent. Currently, she is the Chairman of Raipura Upazila Parishad.
Locals reveal that Lucky is the granddaughter of the infamous Razakar Abdul Qadir. Now, she serves as the Narsingdi District Awami League's Disaster, Relief, and Social Welfare Affairs Secretary. This has sparked discussions among locals about how someone from a Razakar and BNP family got involved in Awami League politics.
Like her daughter Ipsita, mother Laila Kaniz Lucky also reportedly possesses significant wealth. However, her income tax records only show assets worth 12 crore rupees, with a bank loan of 2 crores. Despite using luxury cars like Pajero, BMW, and Range Rover, none of these vehicles are listed in her income tax documents. Instead, she has declared the asset value of a car to be just three-quarter lakh rupees.
According to Yugantar's research, Laila Kaniz owns a lavish mansion in Narsingdi village. The triplex home features several grand drawing rooms and more than a dozen luxurious bedrooms, none of which are mentioned in her income tax file. She has only declared 75 thousand rupees for the purchase of furniture. Additionally, she has acquired one and a half acres of land in Narsingdi without mentioning any price for it. Lucky also owns four flats in a modern building in the Mirpur area, claiming they were acquired through credit and thus not listing their prices. The 32-year-old makeup artist has also mentioned receiving a gift of crores of rupees from her daughter. Interestingly, she has used clever strategies to avoid easy tracing of her wealth, providing a false address for her Income Tax Number (TIN).
It is known that Lucky, once an ordinary teacher at Titumir College, entered politics overnight. She was elected unopposed as the Raipura Upazila Parishad Chairman due to her close relationship with a local influential Awami League leader and former minister. Her rise in the political arena is also attributed to the illegal money of her husband, Motiur.
